Delaware Technical and Community College’s Location

Delaware Community College is the only community college in First State with four locations:

The Stanton Campus is in Newark, the state’s largest city. The Stanton Campus offers over 60 degree and certificate programs and continuing education courses.

The Terry Campus is in Dover, the state capital of Delaware. The Terry Campus offers over 40 degree and certificate programs and continuing education courses.

What You Will Learn in the VetMed Program

The VetMed program at Delaware Tech will prepare you for a career in veterinary medicine. You will take courses in anatomy, physiology, and microbiology. You will also participate in clinical rotations, allowing you to gain hands-on experience working with animals.

After completing the program, you will be able to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). This exam is for licensure in most states. Passing the VTNE will allow you to work as a veterinary technician, a vital member of the veterinary healthcare team.

History of Delaware Technical Community College

In 1966, the Delaware General Assembly created Delaware Technical Community College when it approved House Bill 529. This bill was signed into law by then-Governor Charles L. Terry Jr., and the first Delaware Tech campus opened its doors in Sussex County in September 1967.

The institution’s founders were encouraged by their results in the first year, as three hundred and sixty-seven students enrolled with the slogan “A job for every graduate, a graduate for every job.” The following year showed an even more incredible response as enrollment doubled.

They soon realized they needed to build additional laboratories and classrooms at what was then known as the “Southern Campus.” In 1995, they named this campus after its first director, Jack F. Owens – thus honoring him forever by renaming it the “Owens Campus.”

Classes had barely begun at Georgetown when plans were already underway to establish a second campus in northern Delaware. They quickly sought a rented space for a temporary location at Blue Rock Shopping Center in Wilmington.

The “Northern Campus” opened to positive reviews in 1968, with 375 full-time students enrolling. However, it quickly became apparent that they would need more than the rented facilities for the number of students wanting to attend classes.

When the board was trying to find a permanent spot for Delaware Tech, they were worried that one big campus would not serve both urban and suburban populations well. So, on October 8th, 1968, after considering input from architects and concerned citizens, they decided it would be best to develop a “multi-campus” facility with two locations.

That way, they could more effectively meet all New Castle county residents’ needs. Because of this, they created the Stanton Campus (1973) and Wilmington Campus (1974).

To honor its former president, who served many years, Senate Bill 222 renamed the Wilmington Campus to the “Orlando J. George, Jr. Campus.” He stepped down from being Delaware Tech President on June 30th, 2014.

Based on a survey of high school juniors and seniors in Kent County, Delaware Tech discovered that 47% percent would be interested in attending a branch campus. The need for a community college in Kentucky led to the establishment of Kent Campus in 1972.

They later changed the name to Terry Campus in honor of Governor Charles Terry, who advocated for the creation of the college.

The President’s Office, situated near the Terry Campus, supports all campuses by fulfilling various roles. With Delaware Tech’s recent student enrollment expansion, the President’s Office is crucial in organizing activities between all locations.

The training and education provided by Delaware Tech have benefited students of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life. One-fourth of Delaware’s population has taken courses at Delaware Tech.

How Many Students are Accepted Per Year

Delaware Technical Community College’s open-door admissions policy allows anyone aged 18 or older with a high school diploma to access our resources and education. The admissions process is quick and easy, and they offer a variety of programs that prepare students to enter the job market or transfer to four-year colleges for further education.

Admission Criteria for US Students

To be eligible for admission to Delaware Tech, students must:

Be at least 18 years of age
Have a high school diploma or equivalent
Meet any additional program-specific requirements
Submit a completed application and pay around $35 application fee*
Take the Accuplacer assessment test (unless exempt) and complete the required coursework in reading, writing, and math
Register for classes

Waiving of application fees is available for individuals eligible for a fee waiver. Fee waivers are available to:

US citizens or permanent residents who can provide documentation of participation in an approved government assistance program OR
Active-duty service members and veterans of the US Armed Forces, National Guard or reserves, and their spouses or dependents

Admission Criteria for Foreign Students

To be eligible for admission to Delaware Tech, international students must submit the following:

Official high school transcripts or equivalent
Proof of English proficiency
Bank statement verifying availability of funds

The steps below are for international students who wish to study at Delaware Tech on an F-1 student visa. If you have questions or need assistance, don’t hesitate to contact student support and speak with an admissions representative.

To have your application considered, please take the following steps:

Visit the University’s programs of study page to select the academic program and campus you plan on attending. Even though you can apply to any campus, choose the location that would work best for you logistically.

You must complete the F-1 International Student Information Packet and Application (PDF) and the Application for Admission (PDF). Once you have finished them, send all related materials to the campus where you are applying.

Show that you can handle college-level work in English and meet all other admission requirements before enrolling in a degree or diploma program.

If your test results show that you need to improve your English skills, you must enroll in the University’s Intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) Program.

Admission Criteria for Transfer Students

Students who have completed college coursework at another institution may be eligible to transfer those credits to Delaware Tech. To do so, you must submit the following:

Completed application for admission

Students who have completed an Associate Degree or 60+ college credits are not required to submit high school transcripts or take the placement tests.

For students who have completed fewer than 60 college credits, they must also submit the following:

Passing scores on the placement tests or completion of required developmental coursework
To be eligible for admission, transfer students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Individual programs may have additional GPA requirements.

Veterinary Technology Associate Degree Program

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredits the Veterinary Technology program at Delaware Tech. This two-year program prepares you to take the AVMA Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) to become a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT).
