The History of Mesa Community College
In 1963, there was an establishment of Mesa community college by Mart Godinez as an extension branch of Phoenix College. The Mesa community college address was 809 West Main Street. On September 11, 1963, Mesa Extension started enrolling 330 students in the first semester of study.
In 1964, the Mesa students chose Hokams as the nickname for its sports team. The Mesa community college was able to purchase 8.0 hectares (20 acres), with the option to buy additional 16.1 hectares (40 acres) for its new campus at Dobson and Southern Roads in Mesa, courtesy of the capital money from the bond referendum in 1964.
The Mesa architects, Horlberk, Hickman & Associates, and Tempe architect Kemper Goodwin did the designing of the three-building campus. In contrast, the Tibshraeny Bros. Construction Company did the part of building it.
For the first several years, until the college expanded, portable buildings were used in addition to the three permanent facilities. The Mesa community college and the Glendale community college were independent organizations due to the establishment of Phoenix College by the Maricopa junior college district board on April 12, 1965.
On May 29, 1968, Mesa Community college held ceremonies to graduate its inaugural class on its new campus. Hokama was the previous Mesa community college mascot but changed to Thunderbird in 1974. In 1978, the construction of the Outback Theater took place.
In 1987, the bar code came into use at the library as a component of a new automation system. Every item in the library’s collection had a barcode, which first appeared on the students’ identity cards.
